So I made reservations at a restaurant in the city for my birthday. I guess its kind of odd that I did all this myself. I suppose I could have asked DH to do it but it's not really necessary. He'll make my birthday special as he every year. I'm turning 26 on the 24th....I'm starting to feel a little old. I know it's stupid, but it's weird to think that I'm in the latter half of my 20s. The young carefree days are over with. I love my life now, but being an adult comes with a lot of responsibilities. It's nice to think back to college when I could just waste away a day that I didn't have class.
OK I started writing this on Friday but I got distracted by a work party and then poof! the day was over and the weekend began! Now it's Monday and it's back to work. The weekend was pretty good. I ran errands Saturday morning and got my sister's package in the mail. I'm not sure if it will get there in time but it will get there pretty close to her birthday. We went to the zoo on Saturday. That was fun for the most part. We missed a lot of the animals. I'm not really sure why but they were already inside for the night. Kind of a bummer.
DH complained about the lack of animals like he did the last time we went to the zoo, which was over three years ago. I remember it pretty well because we went when he came to visit me from FL. It was March and there was a big heat wave like in the 80s. We had met both working at Ruby Tuesday in the Summer of 2004. He was a bartender and I was a waitress. Apparently, from what he said, I was a complete biotch that summer. I was really bummed and annoyed at being back at my parents place. I had spent the past semester in Lyon, France and coming back to the states to live with my parents and work at Ruby Tuesday was a real letdown. We didn't start dating until I came back for Christmas break at the end of 2004. I walked in to grab a drink and check my schedule since I was going to be working there over Christmas break. DH was the first person I saw at the bar.
I realized I was happy to see him. I started flirting with him more and I would hang out at the bar in the morning to read the newspaper before I had any guests sitting in my section. One night after my shift, he was hanging out at the bar with a regular. He hadn't been working that day. He asked me to come hang out with them. After a few drinks, we were both leaving at the same time and as I was walking out, I was kind of nervous and hoping he would say something. Finally, he asked if I wanted to go across the way to another bar. So we were flirting a lot and ended up making out at the bar. We went on a few more dates and ended up hooking up before I went back to school. It was my first time! I know it's kind of odd, but I was tired of being a virgin and felt I was ready. After having sex for the first time, I realized, hey this isn't that big of a deal.
So I went back to school and I would call him on occasion. He was very slow about calling me back and I got into a bad habit of only calling him when I was drunk on the weekends. We hung out some over Spring Break. Finally I figured maybe he isn't interested so I stopped calling him and hung with other guys. I graduated and went on a 3 1/2 week backpacking trip through Europe with my sister. It was awesome! We were Budapest, Hungary and I got an e-mail from him. Apparently, he was annoyed that I hadn't come back to FL for the summer and was wondering where I was. He said he was waiting for me to come back. Yes! My strategy had worked. Back off and let him pursue me. I told him I would be back in a few weeks.
We got back to the states and drove from DC to FL. We dated the whole summer and it was really nice but we both knew that I was leaving for graduate school in the Fall so it was kind of doomed. I left for grad school and we kept in touch. I would see him when I came home to visit my parents. Finally in March 2006, I convinced him to come to DC for a visit since he had never been here before. That was when we visited the zoo and had a wonderful long weekend together. I was so sad to see him go. He left and then I talked to him on the phone after he arrived at the airport. I was trying to say, "Wow this really sucks, that you had to leave, what are we going to do about this?" The next morning I woke up to an e-mail from him saying that he had a really great weekend and that he loved me and that he wanted to move to DC as soon as he finished college! You can imagine my surprise. It was crazy! Well he moved here the following August and it's been great ever since!

Handy, I knew some of the story of how you guys got together, but I'm glad you filled in the blanks! This is such a great story :)
ReplyDeleteAnd for the record, I don't think it's weird at all that you booked reservations for your birthday dinner.
